genetic counseling: A way of facilitating the exchange of information of a person’s genetic legacy, including diagnosing disorders and risk of recurrence, along with providing support groups for those affected by genetic disorders.

genetic marker: A gene or DNA sequence having a known location on a chromosome and associated with a particular gene or trait.

genetic mutation: Any event that changes genetic structure, or any alteration in the inherited nucleic acid sequence of the genotype of an organism.

genetic testing: Tests done for clinical genetic purposes, including the diagnosis of genetic disease in children and adults, identification of future disease risks, prediction of drug responses, and detection of risks of disease to future children.

health privacy: The protected right of patients when it comes to their health records.

heart disease: Any disorder that affects the heart’s ability to function normally, some of which are inherited.

hypertension: When the blood pressure, the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries, reaches above normal levels.

inherited disease: Any disease or disorder that is inherited genetically.
